Morticulture:  Hidden Lake Gardens, Forest of the Living Dead

Location: Hidden Lake Gardens, Tipton, MI

Which is more alive:  a living tree or a dead one? The answer may surprise you. Hidden Lake Gardens plant propagator, Jon Genereaux, will lead a discussion and hike that looks closely at living and dead trees in the HLG woods. In a live tree, only a thin layer of wood grows and transports nutrients and water from the roots to the leaves. A dead tree teems with life in the form of fungi, bacteria, insects, and other organisms. Dead trees take a long time to disappear into the forest floor, allowing new life to spring up within them for many years. Life inside a decomposing tree is a microscopic forest within a forest, teeming with miniature life, seeds fall in their midst and germinate to repopulate the forest. Take a two-hour hike into the forest with Mr. Genereaux to observe and discuss the process of decomposition, the final stages of a tree’s life back into the biosphere…a journey back to its beginning. Dress for the weather and wear shoes suitable for hiking on unpaved woodland trails. $10 per person / $8 for Friends of HLG. Pre-registration is required, please call 517-431-2060 to register.
